FRAGRANCES OF FEBRUARY – LEMON AND ORANGE

LEMON (lat. Citrus limonium L. – limu)
Lemon is a fruit from the citrus family. For thousands of years it was cultivated in Asia, from where it arrived in Europe, in ancient Greece more specifically. The ancient Greeks learned about this medicinal fruit thanks to the Macedonian king Alexander the Great, who brought it from Persia. Therefore the Greeks named it a Persian apple. The origin of the Croatian word ‘limun’ is associated with the Persian word ‘limu’.

ORANGE (lat. Citrus aurantium L.)
Orange is a fruit that belongs to a citrus fruits group. India and China are the ancient homelands of an orange. Orange is the evergreen tree. It can live up to 500 years. It has fragrant white flowers and round fruit with orange peel. In favorable conditions a tree can generate up to 1,000 fruits.

The mild climate of the island of Lošinj reflects in a large variety of plant species. According to research, 1018 plant species have been identified, of which 939 species belong to the autochthonous flora. 230 species are medicinal herbs. About 80 species, mostly exotic plants, were brought from other parts of the world.

Lošinj captains and sailors brought them from their voyages and planted them in the gardens around their houses. Here one can find agaves, Mexican cactus (Opuntia), palm trees, magnolias, myrtles, pistachios, mimosas, fig trees from India (karmus-nassarah), lemon, orange and tangerines (brought from Vietnam to Palermo, and then to Mali Lošinj).

WE RECOMMEND:
LEMON LIQUER (LIMUNCELLO) OF „CAPTAIN PETAR BUDINICH“
1 l of pure alchohol
7-8 large lemons
1l water
1/2 kg of sugar
Wash the lemons well with a brush under running hot water. Remove the upper part of the lemon peel, slice it (avoid the white part of the peel because it gives bitterness to the liqueur) and put it in the jar with alcohol. Leave it in a dark place for at least 15 days. After that, prepare the syrup: Cook water and sugar. Stir until all sugar dissolves and the syrup becomes transparent. It is not necessary to boil it. Leave it to cool completely. Strain alcohol and discard peels. Mix alcohol and syrup and then pour it into glass bottles. Close tightly and wait at least 15 days before the tasting. Keep Limoncello in the freezer.
